A diesel electric locomotive comprises a first A.C. generator which supplies a traction motor, and a second A.C. generator which supplies the excitation winding of the first generator through a controlled rectifier bridge. In the system shown, a diesel engine 1 drives first and second generators 2, 3. The power winding 8 of the first generator supplies the armature Rl of a traction motor M, whilst the power winding 9 of the second generator supplies the excitation winding S1 of the motor M and also the excitation windings 4, 5 of both generators through slip rings 6, 7. Double bridges 13, 14, 15, formed of controlled rectifiers, are included in the supply lines for all the excitation windings, and these are controlled from a unit 16 connected to pulse generators 17, 18, 19. The unit 16 is provided on lines 23, 24, 25 with set values of the currents in the windings 4, 5 and Sl, and a device 26 measures the voltage across the power winding 9. The double bridges permit both regulation and reversal of the current in the excitation windings. A battery 28 is provided for starting the engine, and the generator 3 may also serve as a supply for train heating and battery charging. |
