1,156,961. Graft polymers. STANDARD OIL CO. 18 Aug., 1966 [18 Aug., 1965], No. 37075/66. Heading C3G. A graft polymer is produced by polymerization of 100 parts by weight of monomers comprising (A) at least 50% of a nitrile wherein R is hydrogen, a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl group or halogen and (B) 0 to 50% of an ester wherein R 1 is hydrogen a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl group or halogen and R 2 is a C 1 to C 6 -alkyl group, in the presence of 1 to 40 parts of (C) a copolymer containing 50% to 95% of a conjugated diene and 50 to 5% of a nitrile The nitrile may be (meth)acrylonitrile,α- chloroacrylonitrile,α-fluoracrylonitrile, or ethyl acrylonitrile; the ester is e.g. a methyl, ethyl, propyl, amyl or hexyl (meth)acrylate, methylα-chloroacrylate or ethylα-chloroacrylate and the diene may be 1,3-butadiene or isoprene. The graft polymers are preferably prepared in aqueous emulsion at 0‹ to 100‹ C. using a free radical initiator. In the examples butadieneacrylonitrile copolymer latices are grafted with methacrylonitrile alone or with mixtures of (i) methacrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate, (ii) acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate or (ii) acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and ethyl acrylate.
