Method and device for assessing the remaining lifespan of a sensor unit

The method involves providing a sensor (10) e.g. strain gauge, that is specified for number of load cycles and attached to a cyclically operating machine e.g. diesel engine. Load of the sensor is detected by the machine in the load cycles. A deterioration factor of the sensor is determined, based on the detected load, by a deterioration model of the sensor for the load cycles. A measured variable e.g. cylinder pressure, is used for determining the deterioration factor. The load cycles are weighed with the determined deterioration factor for estimating remaining life span of the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a device estimating remaining life span of a sensor unit.
