The water wheel assembly (10) has a water wheel (12), which rotates around an axis of rotation (D) and has multiple paddles (14). A radial roller gate shield (16) is arranged upstream to the water wheel and is rotatably mounted around its axis of rotation. The radial roller gate shield is designed such that it rotates in front of the water wheel depending on the water level. The radial roller gate shield rotates opposite to the direction of the water level change. The water wheel is rotatably mounted in a frame (20). An independent claim is included for a method for retrofitting a water channel with a water wheel for energy recovery.
