Fabrics, e.g. cotton cloth, are treated with a composition comprising a fabric conditioning compound selected from- (7) diethylamino ethanol-stearamide-ethyl sulphate, (8) the reaction product of an amine having the formula R1NH2 and epichlorohydrin and (9) the reaction product of 2-3 moles of an acid of the formula R4COOH and an alkylene diamine of the formula in which R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 16-20 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, R3 is R1 or R2, R4 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 15-19 carbon atoms, R5 is an alkylene group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms, R6 is a hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, R9 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, X is a halide, sulphate, alkyl sulphate having 1-3 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or acetate and y is the valency of X, and an optical brightener having the formula in which M is hydrogen or an alkali metal, preferably in amounts of 99.5-80 and 0.5-20 parts by weight respectively. The composition may be admixed with an inert solid diluent sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sulphates, borates, phosphates, citrates or urea, the resulting mixture in dry or granulated form containing at least 1% by weight of the fabric conditioning compound. The compositions may be applied to the fabrics as emulsions having improved stability when subjected to cyclic freezing and thawing conditions by the incorporation therein of a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula in which R7 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 10-14 carbon atoms, each R8 is R2 or R7 and R2, X and y are as defined earlier, preferably in an amount of 1/4 % to 2% by weight. Supplemental emulsion stabilisers which are N-lauryl b -amino propionic acid, dimethyl coco amine oxide, the polyoxyethylene ester of tall oil containing 8-30 ethylene oxide units, polyoxyethylene lauryl ether containing 1-30 ethylene oxide units, polyoxyethylene sorbitan manolaurate containing 6-20 ethylene oxide units, dodecyl methyl sulphoxide, ethylene oxide condensates of straight and branched chain unsubstituted aliphatic alcohols having 8-20 carbon atoms containing 1-30 ethylene oxide units and alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condensates having 8-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain and 8-30 ethylene oxide units, may also be added to the aqueous emulsion, preferably in an amount of 0.2-1% by weight. The amount of ionisable salts, e.g. sodium, potassium and ammonium sulphates and chlorides and phosphates and wear soluble salts of formic, acetic, propionic, citric, tartaric, malonic or maleic acids, present in the aqueous emulsion should preferably be kept between 0.005% and 0.1% by weight and the amount of aliphatic alcohols containing 1-3 carbon atoms below 1% by weight to obtain satisfactory emulsions. The emulsion is preferably adjusted to a pH below 7 by the addition of an aliphatic acid containing 1-3 carbon atoms or a hydroxy aliphatic acid containing 1-4 carbon p atoms and the emulsion may also contain perfumes, colourants and germicides. Mixtures of the quaternary ammonium fabric conditioning compounds (1) and diamides (9) may be used in the weight ratio of 1:4 to 4:1.ALSO:Aqueous emulsions of compositions comprising a fabric conditioning compound selected from- (7) diethylamino ethanol-stearamide-ethyl sulphate, (8) the reaction product of an amine having the formula R1NH2 and epichlorohydrin and (9) the reaction product of 2-3 moles of an acid of the formula R4COOH and an alkylene diamine of the formula in which R1 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 16-20 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, R3 is R1 or R2, R4 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 15-19 carbon atoms, R5 is an alkylene group containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms, R6 is a hydroxyalkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, R9 is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1-3 carbon atoms, X is a halide, sulphate, alkyl sulphate having 1-3 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or acetate and y is the valency of X, and an optical brightener having the formula in which M is hydrogen or an alkali metal, are stabilised by the incorporation therein of a quaternary ammonium compound of the formula in which R7 is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing 10-14 carbon atoms, each R8 is R2 or R7 and R2, X and y are as defined earlier, Supplemental emulsion stabilisers which are N-lauryl b -amino propionic acid, dimethyl coco amine oxide, the polyoxyethylene ester of tall oil containing 8-30 ethylene oxide units, polyoxyethylene lauryl ether containing 1-30 ethylene oxide units, polyoxyethylene sorbitan manolaurate containing 6-20 ethylene oxide units, dodecyl methyl sulphoxide, ethylene oxide condensates of straight and branched chain unsubstituted aliphatic alcohols having 8-20 carbon atoms containing 1-30 ethylene oxide units and alkyl phenol ethylene oxide condensates having 8-12 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain and 8-30 ethylene oxide units, may also be added to the aqueous emulsion. The amount of ionisable salts, e.g. sodium, potassium and ammonium sulphates and chlorides and phosphates and wear soluble salts of formic, acetic, propionic, citric, tartaric, malonic or maleic acids, present in the aqueous emulsion should preferably be kept between 0.005% and 0.1% by weight and the amount of aliphatic alcohols containing 1-3 carbon atoms below 1% by weight to obtain satisfactory emulsions. The emulsion is preferably adjusted to a pH below 7 by the addition of an aliphatic acid containing 1-3 carbon atoms or a hydroxy aliphatic acid containing 1-4 carbon atoms and may also contain perfumes, colourants and germicides.
