[Also in Division H1] The inward flow, multiple disc or drum element(s) 11 of a rotary filter is/are divided into sectors, and filter cake is removed therefrom at a particular angular position by means of a reverse flow pulse of gas delivered from a reservoir 24 through pneumatic valve 22, which is controlled by a timer 17 to open for a predetermined period at times when the shaft 10 of the filter is in predetermined positions. Thus the time but not the duration of reverse flow cleaning is controlled by the shaft rotation, and a sector may be cleaned for example only once after every six revolutions through the slurry. Geared to the shaft 10 is a vane 15 which coacts with a magnetic proximity switch 16 to start timer 17. Vanes 15 and gears may be changed to alter the cleaning sequence and frequency, and vane 15 is adjustable angularly on its shaft by a system of venier-like holes (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) to vary the shaft position at which timer 17 is actuated. Timer 17 produces an electric pulse of adjustable duration which operates solenoid-valve 18 to open valve 22. As shown, the diaphragm 21 which actuates valve 22 is supplied with compressed air from a compartment 26 connected to main compartment 24 by a one-way valve 27, but the compartments could be separate. Reservoir 24 is supplied by a compressor 25. Vacuum lines (44, 45) serve to pick-up slurry and to dry it on sectors in positions angularly upstream of the discharge position, lines (44, 45) and 13 being connected sequentially to ducts 9 in shaft 10 leading to various sectors by rotary valve 12 (Fig. 6, not shown). A channel (47) connecting lines 13, (44) in the valve facilitates rapid depressuring of line 13 after valve 22 closes to deflate the cloth covering the filter elements before it can foul solids collection members. The valve 20, 22 is designed for rapid opening compared with its 'open' time. |
