[Also in Division F4] An extrusion press for drying rubber crumb comprises a cage formed of spaced bars 55 and divided by axially spaced bushings 100, which are hardened and have sufficiently small clearance from adjacent worm flights 65 to restrain the shaft 20 against bowing. Bars 55 and bushings 100 are clamped to their supporting semi-cylindrical cage sections 51 (Fig. 4, not shown), and sections 51 are bolted together at 53. The press has a delivery screw 50 in inlet hopper 12 and an annular outlet formed by sleeve 70 and a cone 72, which is axially movable by hand wheel 82 to vary the opening. A rotary lug 87 assists discharge through the opening. Sections 51 incorporate heating passages (105) for steam. The worms 65 are notched at 67 and spaced on shaft 20 by collars 62, and lugs 60 extend from clamping bars (57) to assist worms 65 in mechanically working the heated crumb, whereby cells are broken and liquid flashed off. The press is enclosed in a housing (110) (Figs. 1, 3, not shown), and discharged crumb falls on to a conveyor (37). The press may be fed from a chamber (8) in which rubber is preheated, and two presses may operate in series with an auxilliary shredder therebetween.</p> |
