Primary amines are prepared by the hydrogenation of nitriles of aliphatic or cycloaliphatic monocarboxylic acid nitriles with 4-24 C atoms at 220-400‹ C. at a pressure to 50-400 atmospheres, with excess hydrogen with which is admixed 3-15% by volume of NH 3 , in the presence of catalysts which form oxides under the reaction conditions, in the form of tablets. Zn/Cr oxide and Zn/Al oxide catalysts are preferably used. In Example 1 coconut fatty acid nitrile is hydrogenated with H 2 containing 5% NH 3 at 290‹ C., 240 atmospheres over a Zn/Al oxide catalyst to yield a mixture of C 8-18 amines. In Example 7 caprylic acid nitrile is converted to n-octylamine by heating with H 2 containing 9% NH 3 at 300‹ C., 260 atmospheres over Zn/Cr oxide catalyst. |
