The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for controlling an audio output, and more specifically, to a method and an apparatus for controlling an output volume of an audio output of a headphone depending on impedance of the headphone when the headphone is connected to a portable terminal. More Specifically, the method for controlling an audio output in a portable terminal comprises the steps of: outputting a test audio signal to the headphone for preset amount of playback time when the headphone is connected to the portable terminal; collecting ambient noise interval information and impedance interval information of the headphone while the test audio signal is output to the headphone; determining impedance of the headphone based on the ambient noise interval information and the impedance interval information; determining a gain of an audio signal based on the determined impedance; and amplifying the audio signal in proportion to the determined gain and outputting the amplified audio signal to the headphone.
