PURPOSE: An encoding/decoding method and an apparatus of a high definition image are provided to improve the encoding efficiency by performing the encoding using a high correlation of the pixels adjacent to time/space and shown in the image. CONSTITUTION: An image encoding device produces a prediction block by the prediction of a current block(S1910). The apparatus produces a residual block by the subtraction of the predicted block and the current block(S1920). Depending on a block type of the current block, the apparatus determines the conversion and quantization type. The residual block is converted and quantized according to the determined conversion and quantization type(S1930,S1940). The apparatus encodes the conversion and quantized residual block.
