The present invention relates to a steering assisting method and a steering assisting system which effectively assisting the steering manipulation of a driver by accurately and rapidly providing the information of the distance to objects on the front, lateral, and the rear sides of a vehicle based on the information of a steering angle for a driver when the vehicle is reversing in narrow alleys. The steering assisting method includes a step of sensing the input of a reverse gear of the vehicle with the steering assisting system mounted on the vehicle; a step of operating a distance measuring sensor at a predetermined cycle corresponding to the sensed input of the reverse gear; a step of receiving sensing signals from a steering angle sensor; a step of calculating timings of transceiving signals transmitted and received to/from the distance measuring sensor and calculates the distance to the objects around the vehicle based on the transceiving timings; a step of estimating the distance to the objects around the vehicle based on the radius of the rotation of the vehicle if it is determined that the radius of the rotation of the vehicle is included in the sensing signals of the steering angle sensor; and a step of outputting the distance information for assisting steering the vehicle including at least one among the calculated distance and the estimated distance.
