The present invention relates to a method for classifying packets for processing the IP packets with various devices processing the IP packets. Especially, the present invention relates to the method of enabling more rapid packet classification by solving the defect of the previous technology, which detects a process rule to apply the IP packets from a rule table using an area-based quad tree (AQT) algorithm. The present invention is mounted an additional subtree on a quadtree not to have the bias of rule information toward a root node, and using a hash table or additional quadtree to be achieved.
