The method involves displaying a portion of wiring diagram representation (S) on a screen (8), and detecting contours i.e. traced zones (T1-T4) seized by a user on the screen during display of the portion. Coordinates of each contour and definition data of a part of the diagram are compared, and electronic components located inside the contour are determined according to the comparison result. Each contour is associated with respective function name and a list of identifiers of the components in a memory, where the identifiers are obtained according to definition data of the diagram. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program installed in a data processing device comprising a set of instructions for performing a method for processing data (2) a data processing device.
