PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary blood pump which can prevent problems of the related art requiring a seal member to prevent escape of blood from a pumping chamber as use of mechanical bearings necessitates protrusion of a shaft beyond the pumping chamber, which becomes a source of thrombosis and sometimes hemolysis as well as premature wear of an impeller.SOLUTION: A rotary blood pump includes one or more stators 32, 34 overlying exterior surfaces of a wall defining a pumping chamber. A rotatable impeller within the pumping chamber may have a hydrodynamic thrust bearing adapted to constrain a position of the impeller along an axis of rotation relative to the wall when the impeller is rotating about the axis of rotation. The impeller position may thus be constrained without requiring a constant magnetic pole magnetic force to be applied in the axial direction from a prescribed position of a housing.
