Disclosed is a battery system comprising a battery (10), which has a plurality of battery cells (12), and a temperature-moderating unit (20), which contains a coolant circuit (24) that can be filled with a liquid coolant, for moderating the temperature of the battery cells (12), characterised in that the temperature-moderating unit (20) has a sensor (30) which is designed to recognise a material characteristic of the coolant in the coolant circuit (24). Further disclosed are an electric or hybrid vehicle and a watercraft or ship comprising the battery system.
