A composite image of a subject viewed from an arbitrary view point is to be generated from a plurality of captured images obtained by capturing the images of the periphery of the subject from different directions and further the differences in brightness of the captured images between cameras are to be eliminated so as to obtain a continuous periphery image. For this purpose, an image processing apparatus comprises a calculation unit, a storage unit and a composition unit. The calculation unit calculates, on the basis of the brightness of each of a plurality of captured images, correction values for the pixel values of some of the pixels constituting the captured images. The storage unit stores the correction values calculated by the calculation unit for the respective ones of said some of the pixels. The composition unit obtains the pixel values of the pixels on a composite image that correspond to the pixels constituting the captured images, thereby generating the composite image. It should be noted that the composition unit obtains the pixel values of the pixels on the composite image by correcting the pixel values of the pixels constituting the captured images on the basis of the positional relationships of the pixels on the captured images, the correspondence between each captured image and the composite image, and the correction values stored in the storage unit. |
