PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brake application detection device that can accurately detect application of brakes without depending upon attention of a person, and further to provide a brake application detection method.SOLUTION: A brake application detection device has a first temperature sensor, a second temperature sensor, a calculation section and a determination section. The first temperature sensor measures temperatures of wheels of a vehicle traveling on rails at a first measurement position. The second temperature sensor measures the temperatures of the wheels of the vehicle traveling on the rails at a second measurement position located downstream the first measurement position. The calculation section calculates temperature differences among the temperatures of the wheels measured by the second temperature sensor and the temperatures of the wheels measured by the first temperature sensor. The determination section detects whether or not application of brakes is present on the basis of whether or not the temperature differences calculated by the calculation section are not less than a reference value for detecting the application of the brakes with respect to the wheels. |
