The steel or aluminum piston comprises a cooling channel and piston parts (2), which are connected to along a triangular weld seam (4) produced by a welding process. The weld seam is directed to the cooling channel. A cavity (5) is formed by melting welding bead (6) at an end of the weld seam. One of the piston parts includes a structure (7) such as a thread for alignment of the piston parts to each other. The structure is arranged on an opposite side of the weld seam of the cavity. The cavity has circular, oval, rectangular or triangular shape in a sectional view. An independent claim is included for a welding method for joining two piston parts.
