1275596 Detergent compositions containing effervescent granules COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 30 May 1969 [31 May 1968] 27555/69 Heading C5D A granular detergent composition comprises non-effervescing detergent granules and effervescent granules containing effect material, the effervescent granules exhibiting their effervescene when the composition is added to the wash water used for the washing of fabrics. The term "effect material" is defined as a material which is employed for some special effect in a detergent composition but which would itself be adversely affected by conditions prevailing during the manufacture of the composition (e.g. spray drying) or during storage. Such an effect material may be inorganic or organic bleaching agent such as potassium dichloroisocyanide, a fluorescent brightener such as ultramarine blue, an enzyme such as a protease, a bleach booster such as sodium biomide, a bactericide or a perborate actuator. The effervescent granules may contain a binder such as a fatty acid, polyalkylene glycol, non-ionic detergents, paraffin wax or a higher fatty alcohol. The effervescent granules comprise a solid acid and a solid carbonate which term includes bicarbonates and evolve carbon dioxide when immersed in hot water, and may be of a particle size within the range 0À2 to 3 mm. Examples of suitable solid acids are fatty acids, inorganic acids such as boric acid, alkali metal acid phosphates or sulphates, or other organic acids such as citric, oxalic, tartaric or benzoic acid. The proportion of acid and carbonate in the mixture is preferably at least 5% by weight. The non-effervescing granules may comprise a built detergent composition containing a builder salt and an organic surface-active agent. The detergent may be a conventional surface active agent of the anionic, nonionic, amphotenic or cationic type or a mixture thereof. Surface active agents specified in the examples are an alkylbenzene sulphonate, an ethylene oxide condensate with a primary alkanol and a sodium fatty acid salt.
