The present invention relates to an apparatus for sterilizing ballast water which is taken in ships with ultraviolet rays. More particularly, the present invention relates to an apparatus for treating ballast water with ultraviolet rays, having a square cross-section, in which the cross-section of the body in which ultraviolet light lamps are to be installed is vertical to the direction of insertion of the ultraviolet light lamps and is square, and the ultraviolet light lamps are arranged uniformly at constant spacing on the square cross-section, thus minimizing the number of ultraviolet light lamps relative to the cross sectional area. Furthermore, the arrangement of the ultraviolet light lamps on the square cross-section of the body in a direction vertical to the flow direction of ballast water forms a plurality of lines, and the ultraviolet light lamps in each line are arranged within the space between the ultraviolet light lamps in the line in front of or behind said line, thus preventing the ballast water from flowing without colliding against the ultraviolet light lamps.
