[Also in Division B5] A reinforced non-porous membrane suitable for use in the selective separation of gases from a gas mixture by diffusion, comprises a cured non-porous reinforced elastomer consisting of a plurality of elastomer web portions having a substantially uniform thickness of less than 2 mils interconnected by oriented reinforcing fibres covered with a uniform coating of the same elastomer formed integral with the web portions, the diameter of the fibres being less than 5 times the thickness of the web portions, but being greater than the thickness of the web portions. The elastomer may 'be dimethylsiloxane, cellulosic esters and ethers, polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride which have been rendered elastomeric by adding plasticizers and the fibres may be nylon, glass fibre, "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark) or metal. |
