In one embodiment the client device includes: (1) a network interface circuit operable to transmit a keepalive message on an interval to a NAT gateway and (2) an interval adjust circuit configured to: (2a) increment the interval upon an acknowledgment of the keepalive message and (2b) decrement the interval upon a failure to receive the acknowledgment.
