The method involves providing a current detecting unit for detecting the current of conducting paths (10,20,30). A switch (13) is opened, and a switch (12) is closed for detection of current by current detection unit. A semiconductor switch (24) is set in non-conductive state and the switch (13) is closed, if current is detected by current detection unit. The switch (24) is set in electrically conductive state, when no current is determined. The current is determined by current detection unit, after the switch (24) is closed in electrically non-conductive state. An independent claim is included for a motor starter.
