Abstract The present invention provides pharmaceutical compositions comprising functionalized magnetic nanoparticles that exhibit binding to specific tissue types e.g., brain tissue, bone, or vascular tissue. Functionalized magnetic nanoparticles are particularly useful for detection of vascular diseases and disorders when used in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems.
