Provided is a surface-treated steel sheet for battery containers, which is used for the purpose of forming a battery container for a battery that uses a nonaqueous electrolyte solution as the electrolyte solution. This surface-treated steel sheet for battery containers is characterized by having an iron-nickel diffusion layer that is formed by performing a thermal diffusion treatment after forming a nickel plating layer on at least a surface of the steel sheet, said surface forming the inner surface of a battery container. This surface-treated steel sheet for battery containers is also characterized in that: the ratio of Ni to Fe in the outermost layer of the iron-nickel diffusion layer, namely the Ni/Fe molar ratio is 7.5 or less; and the iron-nickel diffusion layer has a thickness of 0.6 mum or more.
