A method of obtaining a cell block sample comprises the step of absorbing a non-solid sample of cells into a solid cell block material to obtain a cell block sample, where the cell block sample is not gelatin foam. Preferably, the cell block material is a polymeric, open-cell foam, such as a cellulose acetate sponge, or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The cell block material may be present inside a syringe, and the sample of cells obtained by fine needle aspiration (FNA). Alternatively, the non-solid sample of cells may be located within a container, and the solid cell block material added to the container. The method may also include processing the cell block sample by fixing, paraffin processing, and sectioning (see fig 9). The sample cells may comprise candidate tumour or other cells from potentially diseased tissue. |
