A vitamin supplement for adding to cereals, for example to rice, comprises a vitamin or mixture of vitamins and a farinaceous carrier for the vitamins, the supplement being in the form of grains which in respect of size, shape, and appearance, resemble cereal grains. The carrier may be derived from wheat or rice. The supplement preferably contains 0.2-20% by weight of active material, and may also contain for example iron and amino acids. The vitamins may be A, B1, B2, B6, E, and/or niacinamide. Preferably 50-500 parts by weight of cereal grains are mixed with each part by weight of the supplement. The supplement may be made by forming a paste of the vitamin, farinaceous material, and water, extruding the paste to form an elongated mass, cutting to the desired length, and drying the grains thus obtained. The product may also contain agents to enhance the heat stability of the product and which decrease the risk of washing out the active ingredient, for example partial glycerides such as a mixture of glyceryl mono and distearates, or proteins such as albumen. |
