PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an imaging apparatus capable of successfully photographing an image. SOLUTION: An image apparatus comprises: an image taking part 22 for taking an image formed by an optical system and for outputting an image signal corresponding to the taken image; a diaphragm 34 for limiting a light flux passing through the optical system and being incident to the image taking part 22; a focus detection part 21 for detecting a focus state of the optical system on the basis of the image signal; a focus adjustment part 36 for performing a focus adjustment of the optical system by driving a focus adjustment optical system 32 in an optical axis direction on the basis of a focus detection result obtained by the focus detection part 21; and a control part 21 for causing the focus detection part 21 to perform focus detection in a state where a diaphragm value of the optical system is regarded as an open diaphragm value, causing the focus adjustment part 36 to start to drive the focus adjustment optical system 32 on the basis of the focus detection result, and causing the focus detection part 21 to perform focus detection in a state where the diaphragm 34 has been narrowed down during the drive of the focus adjustment optical system 32.
