[Also in Division A3] A method of assembling and bonding component parts to form a composite unit, e.g. forming a shoe upper by laminating a leather upper component with heel and toe stiffeners to a lining component in the flat by means of a natural rubber latex, comprises placing the component parts on a first work support and transferring them successively to a second work support on which they are placed in an overlying registered relationship with adhesive interposed therebetween. When the assembly is complete the parts are pressed together to bond them. As an alternative to a rubber latex adhesive, a thermoplastic film may be used and the film may be activated by heat, e.g. by a high-frequency field. A solvent activated adhesive may also be used. Apparatus for carrying out the method includes a carriage 13 movable from a position over a screen 10 constituting the first work support to a position over a laying-up table 16 constituting the second work support, the carriage also including a platen press 61 for applying pressure to the assembly on the laying-up table. Adhesive is applied from trough 34 by a roller 46 as the parts are transferred from one work support to the other. Registration of the parts on the first work support is achieved by optical means, e.g. projector 6 and mirror 8. |
