1,181,779. Steelmaking; pre-heating scrap. MAERZ-OFENBAU G. m. b. H. Nov. 22, 1968 [Nov. 22, 1967], No.55499/68. Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] Steel is produced in a crucible-like vessel by pre-heating scrap by means of a burner whose products of combustion are drawn through the scrap by suction, and then carrying out the steelmaking process in the same vessel e. g. by pneumatic or electric processes. Two vessels may be used simultaneously by pre-heating scrap in one vessel while converting to steel in the other. The two vessels may be fixed the pre-heating and steelmaking equipment being swung from one vessel to the other, or the equipment may be fixed and the vessels moved from one station to the other on wheels. The burner fuel is heating oil or natural gas with cold or pre-heated air or oxygen. Suitable apparatus comprises vessel 1, with removable lid 2, burners 3 extending down through the lid, and in the side-walls of vessel 1 are draw-off openings 4 connected to suction means 6. Radial tubes 5 extend from the openings 4 inwards and downwardly sloping. Alternatively the burners may be provided near the bottom of the side-walls of the vessel, and a suction tube just protrudes through the removable lid. Fig. 2 (not shown). A third embodiment has burners in the lid as in Fig.1 but with the suction tube also extending through the centre of the lid and down to the lower region of the vessel Fig.3 (not shown).
|
