[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for inserting electrical component leads into a board comprises component inserter means 200, reciprocating means therefor, support means 300 which supports one component at a time in alignment with the reciprocatory path of the inserter means, and means operable subsequent to positioning a component to effect straightening and aligning of the leads. The electrical components 10 are provided with a number of L-shaped leads 12 and are individually fed from a supply 401 into a shoot 500 by a feed escapement 402 actuated by the apparatus control system. As the component 10 is fed on to the support means, a rib 310 thereon outwardly straightens any bent leads. The component inserter 200 comprises a head member 203 slidably mounted on a tube 202 between upper and lower positions, at which the members are connected for simultaneous movement by a detent 206 engaging in either of recesses 204, 205. A slidable head 224 in the tube 202 is provided with a spring to allow for components 10 of different thicknesses. During downward movement of the members 202, 203 a component 10 is picked up by the tube 202 and when an abutment 210 on the head 203 contacts a screw 114, Fig. 11, the detent 206 is forced out of the recess 204. The tube continues downwardly until the leads of the component 10 are inserted into a circuit board 25 and the detent engages in the recess 205. The leads pass through tapered slots 246 at the bottom of spring plates 236, 237 whereby any outwardly bent leads (12A) are straightened, Fig. 3 (not shown). Surfaces 250 on the tube engage surfaces 242, 243 on the spring plates to force these slightly outwardly to prevent withdrawal of the component 10 when the inserter 200 is raised. The interior of the tube is connected to a vacuum source to hold the component, the source being cut off at the end of the stroke of the inserter. As the inserter is withdrawn, support members 301, 302 are returned to a horizontal position to receive the next component 10 which is placed thereon by an arm 601. On the downward stroke of the inserter, the supports 301, 302 are pivoted downwardly after the component 10 has been seized by the tube 202 by a cam-plate 260 acting on spring-loaded followers 325, 326, Fig. 11. A surface 314 of the support 301 acts as a stop for the next component 10 in the shoot 500 when pivoted downwardly.
