A modular handrail is constructed from a plurality of handrail fittings, each comprising a stub having a resiliently deformable spacer provided on an outer surface and a plurality of handrail tubes. Adhesive is applied to the stub of a handrail fitting or to the handrail tube to which the handrail fitting is to be attached, the stub is inserted into a handrail tube causing deformation of the spacer, thereby centralising the stub within the handrail tube and providing a frictional fit between the handrail fitting and the handrail tube. The adhesive is caused or allowed to cure so as to secure the handrail fitting to the handrail tube. The process is repeated for other handrail fittings so as to construct a handrail. The spacer may comprise an elastomeric O-ring disposed in a recess in the stub, or may comprise a plurality of discrete nubs or projections. There is also disclosed a handrail fitting for use with the method and a kit of parts for constructing a modular handrail. |
