The invention relates to an aircraft having a vertical lift jet engine in which means are provided for creating an aerodynamic shield which serves to prevent engine exhaust gases from passing into the air intake of the engine, there being a plenum chamber located between the engine exhaust and the engine air intake, means for supplying air under pressure to the plenum chamber, the air discharging therefrom through narrow slots to create the aerodynamic shield. The aircraft shown has three vertical lift engines 12a, 12b, 12c also two forward thrust engines 13a, 13b and a plenum chamber in the form of a tubular member 15 is located around the air inlet openings of the three engines, a series of elongated slots 16 being formed around the outer periphery of the tubular member. In use air under pressure is tapped from an engine compressor 20 and passes through line 17 to the chamber 15, the air discharging therefrom through the slits 16 to form an aerodynamic shield as indicated at 22, the shield forming a barrier between the engine exhaust gases 30 reflected from the ground and the air passing into the intakes as indicated by arrows 35. |
