[Also in Divisions A5, E2 and F2] A surgical clip (Figs. 1-11) or retractor (Figs. 12, 13) comprises a pair of telescoping members, plunger 12 and barrel 13, with respective jaws 10, 50 and 11, 51, a first pair of grips 25, 26, one on each member arranged so that a pinching action moves the jaws to an operative position, a second pair of grips, 16, 20, one on each of the members arranged so that a pinching action moves the jaws to an inoperative position, a pawl 21 on one of the second pair of grips on one member engaging ratchet teeth 15 on the other member to hold the jaws in their operative position, release of the pawl from the rachet being achieved by pinching the second pair of grips. As described, the plunger and barrel are non- circular to prevent relative rotation. The pawl is carried by one member on a spring arm 18 which is engaged by the grip on the other member to hold the two members together. The ratchet teeth may be on the barrel (Figs. 1, 2, 3, 12) or on the plunger (Figs. 7, 8, 9). |
