Provided is carbon fiber having a small amount of a metal ion elution causing a short by precipitation on electrodes of electrochemical devices such as batteries or capacitors, without high-temperature heat treatment. The carbon fiber includes at least one type of catalytic metal selected from a group consisting of Fe, Mo, and V and a metallic oxide carrier. The R value (ID/IG) of the carbon fiber by raman spectroscopic measurement is 0.5-2.0, and the electrochemical metal elution of the catalytic metal is 0.01 wt% or less.
