Production of Aromatic Dicarboxylic Acids

In a process for the production of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid catalytic oxidation with gaseous oxygen of an aromatic hydrocarbon having two alkyl substituents, or of an aromatic carboxylic acid having an alkyl substituent on the aromatic nucleus is effected at a temperature of from 130‹ to 140‹ C. in a catalyst solution of a cobalt compound in an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid containing 2 to 8 carbon atoms, the solution containing at least 0À5% of its weight of cobalt and the cobalt compound having previously been treated at from 0‹ to 40‹ C. with sufficient peracetic acid to achieve a ratio of Co+3 to total cobalt of at least 0À3. In examples terephthalic acid is obtained by oxidation of pxylene and p-toluic acid using the cobalt catalyst in acetic acid solution.
