A hinge joint assembly, in particular for use in ships' hatch covers, has interconnecting panel elements 1, 2 which are to be folded on to each other from an aligned position, and comprises a gear segment 11, 12 secured to each of the panel elements without being in engagement with each other, and intermediate the two gear segments, which are arranged in a common plane with their centres maintained at a constant distance by means of a structural member 7, there is provided a rack element 13 which is in meshing engagement with each of said gear segments and is movable so as to cause the two gear segments to roll on the rack element. The intermediate rack element may be a double sided toothed rack, a worm or a chain, and it may be operated hydraulically or electrically. |
