A caisson to facilitate work on the bottom of a ship's hull includes walls 3, 3<SP>1</SP> circumjacent an open-topped work-chamber A and ballast tanks 5, a packing ring 4 abutting the hull when the caisson is in situ. Water-tight doors 6 give personnel access to the chamber A from a control compartment M. The tanks 5 can be used for trimming purposes. The caisson is manoeuvred by hydroplanes 10 and propellers 8, which can be pivoted about vertical axes. Careening of the hull can be effected by placing the caisson in an eccentric position relative to the keel. Personnel may enter the compartment M through a flexible ventilating duct 9. |
