[Class 120 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A brake for the spindle of a wire paying out mechanism of the type in which a flyer rotates about a fixed bobbin, has means by which the braking effort may be varied to vary the tension so that the mechanism may be adapted for varying gauges of wire. The 'brake comprises a flat spiral spring 18 secured at its inner end to the rotating spindle 4 to be braked and bearing at its outer end on a drum-like friction member 11, 12 whose effective diameter may be varied to vary the braking effect. The drum-like member, comprising a spring 11 lined with friction material 12 passes at one end through a cut-away portion 9 of a fixed enclosing drum 7 and is anchored at 13 to a control plate 14 constrained by slot 21 and screw 23 to rotate relatively to the base 22 secured to the top of the bobbin. The other end 15 of the drum-like member 11, 12 is anchored to a guide 16 constrained by a radial slot and a screw 20 to slide radially relatively to the base 22 while a lug 180 on the guide 16 engages in a slot 17 in the plate 14 so that rotation of the plate 14 causes radial movement of the guide 16. The combined motion of the ends of the drum-like member causes a reduction in its effective diameter. A locking screw 19 for plate 14 may be provided and graduations on the base 22 may be uncovered by the plate 14 to indicate wire gauge numbers.</p> |
