595818 This disclosure relates to a process for removing metals, particularly mercury or cadmium, from hydrocarbon streams (such as crude oil/petroleum) by use of an ionic liquid, where in the metal-containing hydrocarbon stream is contacted with an ionic liquid to produce a product hydrocarbon stream having reduced mercury content. Wherein the ionic liquid is present in a ratio of a hydrocarbon : ionic liquid volume ratio of 100:1 to 10,000:1 and has the formula [Cat+][X-].
