The cells of a battery are filled with electrolyte by introducing metered quantities of electrolyte into reservoirs 21 positioned above the cells 11 respectively, the reservoirs and the respective cells being interconnected, exhausting the air from the spaces 28 above the reservoirs so that the air from the cells bubbles through the electrolyte and the cells become exhausted and then increasing the pressure in the spaces and thereby forcing the electrolyte into the exhausted cells. A filling device for an annular alkaline battery 11 is shown which comprises a base-plate 12 which supports and locates the battery, a manifold block 15 which sits above the battery and an annular member 24. The manifold block has two concentric rings of reservoirs 21 which correspond to the two concentric rings of cells in the battery and which are connected to the filling holes of the cells by passages 22 which are of reduced diameter at their lower ends. The spaces 28 in the annular member 24 correspond to the reservoirs 21 and are interconnected by annular passages 29 which are connected to the common conduit 31. To fill the battery it is located on member 12 and the manifold 15 and gasket 14 are positioned on top of it. Electrolyte is poured into trough 19 so that it fills the recesses 21. Air pressure in the cells prevents electrolyte from draining through the narrow parts of the passages 22. Excess electrolyte is drained from trough 19 through radial drainage channel 20 and passage 20a (Fig. 3, not shown) and the bottom of the trough is wiped with a flat wiper to remove the last of the excess. Member 24 with gaskets 23 and 23a is replaced and air is evacuated from the cells through the electrolyte, spaces 28, passages 29 and conduit 31 until the cells are exhausted. Conduit 31 is then opened to the atmosphere and electrolyte is forced into the cells.
