[Also in Division F2] A tissue die to be used to provide grafting material comprising body tissue encapsulating a support or reinforcing member, comprises a pair of spaced apart wall members defining a cavity, at least one of the wall members being perforate, there being a graft support or reinforcing member disposed within the die cavity. As in Figure 1, the die is arranged to provide a tubular graft implant and comprises an outer perforated steel tube 10 and an inner imperforate steel member (12) between which is positioned a synthetic mesh or fabric (15) to provide a reinforcement in the graft. In use, the die is secured to the patients' rib cage using tie members 25 and tissue grows through the perforations 11 into the die and forms a tubular graft encapsulating the reinforcement (15). The die is then removed from the patient, and the tubular graft is separated from the die so that it may be re-implanted into the patient or used for a second patient. An alternative die, Figures 4, 5 (not shown), comprises curved perforate and imperforate sheets (31, 30) containing a reinforcement mesh or fabric (36) and is used to provide a curved graft suitable for implantation into the cranium. The die is formed with holes (37) for securing the die into the patient. A third die, Figure 6, provides a heart valve and comprises perforate and imperf orate tri-cuspid (or bi-cuspid) members 40, (42) secured together about reinforcement material (51) and provides a heart valve graft or tri-cuspid (ir bi-cuspid) form. The valve, when open, provides a passage centrally between the cusps whose edges assume a sinuous form; when closed, the edges (62) of the cusps straighten and the cusps abut each other as in Figure 12 (not shown). For promoting suitable tissue growth in the die, the die may be seeded before implantation with blood or with periosteal or epithelial cells. It is stated that a graft structure comprising a tube with a valve at each end may be provided. |
