The invention relates to a method for checking if at least one safety element (3) of a safety circuit of an elevator system is in working order, wherein a first processing unit (5) and a second processing unit (6) are used in the at least one safety element (3), wherein the at least one safety element (3) is connected to a control unit (1) by means of a communication network (2). According to the invention, at least one signal is provided by the first processing unit (5) on the basis of at least one message from the control unit (1). The at least one provided signal is detected by the second processing unit (6) connected to the first processing unit (5) and is transmitted to the control unit (1) by means of the communication network (2).
