The present invention relates to a printing ribbon saving method for an automatic medicine packing apparatus, which comprises: a printing ribbon and packing paper compressing step which adheres a separated printing ribbon and printing paper to each other when medicine packing information is inputted in a state of inserting the printing ribbon and packing paper; a printing ribbon braking step which stops the loosening of the printing ribbon by braking the driven unit of the printing ribbon; a packing paper transferring step which transfers only the packing paper in a paper space for the packing paper by operating an operating unit of a paper transfer unit; a printing ribbon brake releasing step which releases the brake of the driven unit of the printing ribbon; a packing paper printing step which prints packing information on the packing paper while simultaneously transferring the printing ribbon and the packing paper; a packing paper printing completing step which brakes the driven unit of the printing ribbon in order to stop the loosening of the printing ribbon when completing the printing of the packing paper; and a printing ribbon and the packing paper compression releasing step which separates the adhering printing ribbon and the packing paper. The printing ribbon saving method for an automatic medicine packing apparatus: can save the printing ribbon by transferring the printing ribbon only when printing the packing paper and stopping the transfer of the printing ribbon when not printing the packing paper; can prevent the printing ribbon from going with the packing paper and from being cut when printing the packing paper; and can prevent unnecessary consumption of electricity by braking the driven unit using retention force of a step motor of the driven unit of the printing ribbon.
