The vacuum cleaner (10) has a control unit (14) i.e. microprocessor, for detecting a subfloor (28). The microprocessor controls a traction drive (12) in dependence of the detected subfloor, where the traction drive is controllable corresponding to the detected subfloor during operation of the vacuum cleaner. A fan motor (24) is controllable in accordance with the detected subfloor during operation of the cleaner. Two wheels (20, 22) are provided as part of the traction drive, and assigned to respective motors (16, 18), which are designed as brushless permanent magnet motors. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating the robot vacuum cleaner.
