SAFETY SHIELD FOR MEDICAL NEEDLES 5 A safety needle apparatus (10) is provided. The safety needle apparatus (10) includes a needle assembly including a needle mount (11) and a needle cannula (16). The needle cannula (16) defines a lumen and has a sharpened distal tip. The needle mount (11) supports the proximal end of the needle cannula (16) and is adapted to engage an intravenous line. The safety apparatus (10) includes a shield (14) positioned about the io needle cannula (16). The needle cannula (16) is movable in relation to the shield (14). The apparatus (10) also includes a lock insert (26) supported on the needle cannula (16) and a locking member extending from an internal surface of the shield (14), wherein the locking insert (26) and the locking member are configured to prevent movement of the needle cannula (16). Moreover, a platform including a base member, which is configured is to support the needle cannula (16) at a substantially orthogonal orientation to the plane of a top surface of the platform and supports the shield (14), is included. |
