[Also in Division B4-5] Pliers for attaching fastener elements to a support comprise a pair of handles pivotally connected and each supporting a jaw at least one of the jaws having a slot in the end remote from the handles, the slot including a setting-tool receiving portion and a setting-tool retaining portion, a fastener setting tool being detachably mounted on each of the jaws and one of the tools embodying a snap-fastener component supporting die and an eyelet-setting die post, the pliers being readily convertible from a snap fastener component attaching device to an eyelet setting device by manual removal, inversion and remounting of said tool. As shown, each jaw has a narrow-throated slot widening into an aperture, each setting-tool 10, 11 being received in the slot and retained in the aperture by a quarter turn rotation by virtue of the shape of a mounting post 12 of each tool. Retention of the tools in the slots is aided by a bent spring member 16 supported against the pivot 4 and tending to urge the tools 10, 11 outwardly of the apertures. The tool 10 includes a metal fitting 24 forming a pronged-ring supporting die 27 and an eyelet setting anvil 28. The tool 11 includes a metal fitting having a plug 35 and an eyelet orienting and work-piercing post 36. With the pronged ring and fastener component positioned as shown the pliers constitute a snap fastener attaching device. By removal, inversion and remounting of the tool 11 (Fig. 6) the pliers constitute an eyelet setting device. Both tools 10, 11 may be replaced by tools sized in accordance with the eyelets or fastener components to be attached to the work. The handles are biased open by a spring 5 embracing the pivot and abuting internal surfaces of the handles. |
