Provided is a crash box that is more robust than the crash box disclosed in JP 2011-51581A. A crash box (30) comprising a pair of corner parts (32, 33) disposed facing each other, and another pair of corner parts (34, 35) disposed intersecting at an angle of 80 to 100°, the crash box comprising a metal pipe (31) having a transverse cross-sectional shape that has the basic transverse cross-sectional shape of a square. The angle formed by the corner parts (32, 33) is 90 to 150°, and the angle formed by the corner parts (34, 35) is 30 to 90°. The crash box also has a plurality of inwardly convex grooves (36-39) that extend in a longitudinal direction. The cross-sectional perimeter of the pipe (31) on one end (31a) is less than the cross-sectional perimeter of the pipe (31) on the other end (31b). The rectangular ratio (oblateness), which is the ratio of the longest to the shortest diagonal of the polygon constituting the basic cross-sectional shape, varies depending on the axial position of the pipe (31). Furthermore, all of the edges constituting the transverse cross section on one end (31a) are formed parallel with the opposing edges constituting the transverse cross section on the other end (31b), due to the opposing inclined surfaces constituting the grooves (36-39) having different heights. |
