The present invention relates to the novel use of cornus fruit extract and provides a composition containing the cornus fruit extract, a fraction thereof, or compounds isolated therefrom as active ingredients for preventing or treating colitis. The cornus fruit extract, the alcohol-soluble fraction thereof, or Ursolic acid isolated from the cornus fruit according to the present invention can be used as active ingredients for a pharmaceutical composition or a food composition, and the pharmaceutical or food compositions can effectively prevent, delay, improve, or treat the colitis, especially, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). |
