A novel use of phytosterol isolated from Navicula incerta having effect of preventing or treating liver cancer is provided. Accordingly, a composition for preventing or treating liver cancer including stigmasterol and 5beta-hydroxysitostanol isolated from Navicula incerta as an active ingredient is provided. Accordingly, and 5beta-hydroxysitostano upregulate expression of genes involved with hepatoma cell apoptosis inducing factors, while downregulating genes involved with hepatoma cell apoptosis inhibiting genes, thereby lead into effective prevention or treatment of liver cancer.
